Water trip with a boat
From April 1 to October 31.
The best overview of the waterways of the Aidu open-cast mine is, of course, along the water. With our large and stable boat, you can enjoy wonderful views and fly above the water. This is how our visitors have described their emotions.
During the trip, you can see long water canals, a light-blue-green lagoon, the cliffs of Aidu, and, of course, the largest culvert, which is laid out under the road just to get through by boat.

Hike in the footsteps of wild animals
The best time to study game activity and movement are during the winter months with snow, if the traces are visible. During this time, most animals also are on heat, which makes them move more as they are looking for a companion. It is even better to track the game with a local hunter.
The hike takes place near Kohtla-Nõmme in areas with different reliefs: open-cast mine, forest, and Hiiesoo peat field. The larger ungulates and predators of our forests enjoy a peaceful refuge in these places.
Start and end of the hike: the parking lot of the Estonian Mining Museum
Duration: 2-3 h
Distance: 8-10 km
Itinerary: Estonian Mining Museum car park – Hiiesoo – Aidu open-cast mine reclaimed areas – Mining Museum car park. The route may change depending on weather conditions.

Snowshoe trip in Hiiesoo
According to the name of Hiiesoo, it can be assumed that it is a sacred place for old Estonians. Unfortunately, there has been active peat mining in the western part of the bog and all the remaining bog is registered as an active reservoir. Fortunately, it has been found that the use of the Hiiesoo reserve is not very practical.
With easy access and plenty of floating mats, the bog offers both challenges and experiences, even with snowshoes.

Walking tour “Kohtla-Nõmme 100 years with a guide”
The Estonian Mining Museum invites you to get acquainted with the life of miners
The miner spent only a third of the day underground. The rest of the time was spent living his life. The Estonian Mining Museum offers an opportunity to walk through Kohtla-Nõmme through the life of the miners in the company of a guide. The walk, which was born in cooperation with the local community, goes through 90 years and introduces the heritage of oil shale from a fresh point of view.
Kohtla-Nõmme is unique because all the stages of the development of one 20th century workers’ settlement, both in architecture and environment, are compactly represented and preserved here. With the support of the English capital, how did the heart of Kohtla manor become a modern workers’ ‘settlement, why did it stop developing in the Stalinist style, for what reasons and where did the people come from to stay. How were the miners’ wives occupied and what happened in the proud cultural palace? These are just some of the questions that walking will provide answers to.
